I came across this gem of a Youtube channel recently, called “Every frame a painting”. The premise involves our host, ‘Tony’ analysing certain aspects of film making as an art form, as opposed to the usual movie reviews or discussions of “theme” you often see online. The clips are a perfect timed bite-size chunk you can easily watch when you have some downtime. Plus, the visual essays are as well edited as the films he discusses.
I always find it fascinating to understand and investigate other creative mediums, there are always nice takeaways to implement into your own work. And most times it is easier to understand these takeaways from a medium that isn’t the one you specialise in. Every Frame a Painting is a perfect example of this; learning about how to communicate a message beyond the obvious and how the method of communicating is as important as the information itself. (Marshall McLuhan’s The medium is the message springs to mind).
To give you an idea, here are some of the topics he discusses.
Jackie Chan - How to do Action Comedy
Drive - The Quadrant System
David Fincher - And the Other Way is Wrong
Enjoy!
